In 1962, about a hundred pieces of work were transferred to the newly established City Museum and Art Gallery (now the Hong Kong Museum of Art). These works, mostly paintings, drawings and prints related to China Trade, are what is left of the bequest of a very important man — Sir Paul Catchick Chater (1846 - 1926).
Sir Paul Chater was an Armenian born in India who came to Hong Kong in 1864. He became a successful merchant and amassed a considerable fortune as well as an important collection of paintings and ceramics. In 1926, he bequeathed the whole collection to the Hong Kong Government. Unfortunately, only 94 items survived the Second World War. To commemorate the 45th Anniversary of the Museum, a selection of 46 items that form one of our core collections will be displayed to illustrate the legendary history of the Chater Collection.
